Class Descriptions
Balboa is a street, partner dance that evolved around the social dance floors in Southern California (originally on the Balboa Peninsula, where it got its name) to big band swing music. Pure Balboa is done in a very tight position with intricate footwork and a distinct, shuffling motion. Bal-Swing (originally a seperate dance known simply as 'swing') is today related but done in an open position with more movement and a full complement of breaks and turns. Although done to all tempos, Balboa is especially well suited to faster music.

David crafts his classes to accomodate his students, and will introduce techniques and moves that build on each other in each of the sessions. Beginners should start with the Friday evening and/or Saturday morning sessions to gain an understanding of the basic footwork and connection. Experienced dancers are also encouraged to attend the full workshop, starting on Friday, as David will work with you on technique and quality of movement.

Depending on student interest and abilities, the sessions will cover such topics as:
---Pure Balboa, up-count and down-count footwork.
---Concepts which add interest to Pure Bal, such as changing patterns, upper body dynamics and musicality.
---Common and unusual ad-lib steps to dress up your Pure Bal.
---Transitions to tie moves together
---Bal-Swing moves to take you out of closed position, such as lollies, cross-breaks, swivels and throw-outs.
---Fancy footwork to enhance the excitement of the dance.

About the Instructor
A self-described "geek-turned-professional-dancer," David Rehm specializes exclusively in the partnered swing dances, Lindy and Balboa, and is widely considered one of the top Balboa dancers and instructors in the world. He is regulary featured teaching and judging at the most prestigious events dedicated to those dances throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
