Class Descriptions
Thursday, June 5
Dancing The Blues (All levels; no dance experience necessary) This class shows cool ways to move you and your partner's bodies. You'll also learn to take some movements you already know and switch them up so they seem different.
Friday, June 6
A Taste of Andrew Sutton (All levels; no dance experience necessary) With 7+ of Andrew's favorite concepts, drills, & movements, this class is more like a variety show. From Musicality Tips to Lead/Follow Technique, from Rhythm & Balance Drills to Leg Leads, from a Special Warm-up to a Super Secret Closing Game, this class will give you a taste of some of the things Andrew loves most!
Saturday, June 7
The Beauty of Doing Nothing (Suitable for beginning, intermediate and advanced dancers; beginners should have some partner dancing experience) Most of us move more often than we need or mean to. This class is designed to show you how doing less movement in your dancing will allow for so much more to happen!
Improvising with a partner (Suitable for beginning, intermediate and advanced dancers; beginners should have some partner dancing experience) Learn how to use jazz steps to improvise on the social dance floor. This class will also include information on how to learn new moves/movements faster than the average dancer. If you are a shy, timid, or conservative dancer, this class will start to break you out of your shell so smoothly you won't even notice it.
Being Creative (Intermediate and Advanced Lindyhoppers only; solid foundation in basics of Lindy Hop and lead/follow technique required) Through Andrew's facilitation, not only will you be creating your own moves but you will learn some great techniques to make it easy to create moves that both feel great and look great too!
Contact Lindy (Should know basic Lindy Hop or be confident in another dance style) The simple yet eye-opening concepts of Contact Lindy will allow you to be a follow, a lead, or both simultaneously! Contact Lindy is a new collective dance/game, in which at any one moment you might be dancing solo, leading or following in a couple or with multiple partners, or even leading one partner while following another. Throughout each song, partnerships swap and change organically, allowing each individual to create their own spontaneous choreography. As well as being a ton of fun and very easy to learn, Contact Lindy uses and teaches a great deal of lead/follow technique which allows for the possibilities of this dance to grow exponentially with the dancers!
Sunday, June 8
Aerials, Dips & Tricks (All levels; no dance experience necessary) Topics covered will include: - Why some aerials, dips, & tricks look predictable and boring and other simple ones look amazing - How to take moves from predictable to "where did that come from" - Why being grounded both on the ground and in the air is soooo important - How to be grounded on the ground and IN THE AIR - Why having natural leg momentum is vital for safety in aerials & dancing - How to have natural leg momentum - Why dancers have fear when doing aerials, dips, & tricks - How to make your follow feel comfortable with you - How to make your lead feel confident - How to have NFD technique - Some cool moves involving these concepts
Things that make your partner go Hmmm... (Intermediate and Advanced Lindyhoppers only; solid foundation in basics of Lindy Hop and lead/follow technique required) For the Follows, this class will teach several different "tricks" that follows can do to make the lead think she is incredibly creative and fun to dance with. For the Leads, this class will teach you how to be receptive to your partner and how to make up moves of your own on the spot by working with your follow and her movement.
Stealing Games (Intermediate or Advanced Lindyhoppers only; must be very confident with the swingout) Normal dancing consists of you and a partner and the music. Imagine a dance where you are no longer connecting with just one other person but you are connecting with the entire room. In this class, you will learn several fun and easy moves to start you on your way to dancing with 2, 3, 4 or 50+ people. On a simplified level, these moves can also be used to steal the lead or follow, whether it be during a Birthday Jam, a Stealing Jam, or just between you and some friends on the social dance floor. More importantly though, this class is a simple way to create a group connection in your dance scene and help everyone to feel like a closer community.
