Class Descriptions
Friday’s first class, Sugarpush and Variations, focuses on a deceptively simple move which is challenging to master. The Sugarpush offers many opportunities for styling by both the lead and the follow. Dancers should be fluent with 6-count swing footwork (rock step, triple step, triple step) to get the most out of this class.
The Swingout Clinic, Friday’s second class, will offer intermediate and advanced Lindyhoppers an opportunity to improve their technique for this essential 8-count move, and learn some styling variations. Dancers should already be comfortable with the swingout.
Saturday begins with Boogie Woogie, which has its roots in the European 6-count style of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Boogie Woogie is famous for its fast and smooth footwork and is usually danced to the original music of the late 40's and 50's with an emphasis on improvisation. If you are already a lindyhopper or East Coast Swing dancer, this class will add some sizzle to your routines. Beginning dancers are welcome, but will benefit from having had some partner dancing experience.
Fancy Footwork will offer you skills which can apply to Boogie Woogie or many other dance styles. Innovative footwork can help you make each dance an original as you add in special moves and “shines” to show your creativity. A wide range of movements can make your dancing more fun and improve your coordination at the same time. Please take the Boogie Woogie class first.
On Saturday afternoon, explore the Balboa, a swing dance form native to Southern California which features subtle, smooth footwork in eight counts. The first class will introduce you to pure Balboa, which is danced in a tightly closed position, and will cover basic footwork and transition moves. This will be followed by an introduction to Bal-Swing, where partners open into lollies and turns. Beginners are welcome; please start with the first class. If you’ve already learned some Balboa, don’t miss this chance to have your foundation fine-tuned by two of the world’s best Balboa instructors! Marcus & Baerbl will provide extra material to challenge intermediate dancers.
Sunday’s first two classes highlight the Savoy Style Lindy Hop, the original form of this exciting and funky dance which developed at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem in the 1920s. The most popular swing dance in the world, it was named for heroic aviator Charles Lindbergh. Lindy offers opportunities for individual styling and creativity and often incorporates Charleston moves. Two sessions will be offered. Beginning dancers are welcome; please start with the first class.
Learn a variety of Turns and Spins to dress up your Lindy Hop! This class is intended for intermediate dancers who are ready for new moves.
Lindy Hop has a rich heritage, evolving from athletic African-American roots in the 1920s to a smoother, classy dance which took America and the world by storm during the ‘40s. Marcus is one of the world’s acknowledged experts in the history of swing dance styles, having worked with and interviewed many of the “greats” from back in the day. End the busy weekend with a presentation on Lindy History and gain an understanding of how our favorite dance, and the music which impelled it, developed over the decades.

Locations
The Island Dance Academy is located at 27 Haili Street in downtown Hilo, across from the Palace Theatre. There is street parking. Hilo Elks Lodge is at 150 Kino’ole Street in downtown Hilo. What to Bring, What to Expect
If you have a partner, great! If not, come anyway, as partners will be rotated to give everyone experience. Beginners are welcome at many classes, although it will be helpful to have had some partner dancing (lead and follow) experience. Please see the class descriptions. Some classes are intended for intermediate dancers; intermediate dancers who take the foundation classes can expect to be given some additional material to challenge them.
Dress comfortably and be ready to move! Smooth soled shoes with low heels will enable you to turn and execute moves more easily. Slippers, sandals, open-heeled or open-toed shoes and high heels are NOT recommended. For the class at the Island Dance Academy, please carry in your dance shoes to protect the wooden floor.
On Saturday and Sunday, please consider bringing snacks, drinks or lunch to share.
For the Saturday evening dance party, dress up and bring your friends! Even non-dancers will enjoy the music and the “floor show”!
